Know the signs

Signs that shouldn’t wait

If you’re not sure, call. Describing what you’re seeing takes a minute, and we would always rather hear from you early.

  • Trouble breathing, or blue or very pale gums
  • Collapse, weakness, or a seizure lasting more than a few minutes
  • Suspected poisoning (antifreeze, rodent bait, chocolate, xylitol, medications)
  • A swollen, hard, or painful abdomen — especially with retching
  • Straining to urinate with little or nothing produced (particularly male cats)
  • Bleeding that doesn’t stop, deep wounds, or any trauma such as being hit by a car
  • Repeated vomiting or diarrhoea, or a pet that can’t keep water down
  • Difficulty giving birth, or heatstroke
